Here are a couple of things to maintain a strategic distance from when composing a resume.</p><p></p><p>The first thing to keep away from when composing a resume is your title. Truly, you need to compose a title that grabs the eye of the peruser, however there's a line some place that should be crossed. The title is just a hint of something larger. Individuals read your resume, so on the off chance that it doesn't get them, at that point it won't snatch them. So the title alone ought to be an extremely low need with regards to your resume.</p><p& gt;</p><p>The second thing to maintain a strategic distance from when composing a resume is utilizing a huge segment on your resume in the principal section. Much of the time this isn't fundamental since the most significant thing is simply the resume. A great many people have made sense of that you have to fill the principal passage and the initial five or so sentences to give an extremely brisk diagram of what your identity is and why they should employ you.</p><p></p><p>If you have to go past the primary section in the resume, you may need to remember your instruction for the last passage. In the event that you have higher educations or preparing in the ongoing past, this is an extra thing to keep away from. In any case, on the off chance that you are an ongoing alumni with a graduate degree or an expert degree, this can even now be a significant piece of your resume.</p><p></p><p>You can broadly expound on the things to keep away from when composing a resume on the off chance that you feel it's a fundamental component in your pursuit of employment. This is extremely simply cushioning your resume and never really go anyplace. It can cause you to appear overqualified.</p><p></p><p>The fourth thing to stay away from when composing a resume is to make it excessively perplexing. The best resume I've at any point seen was simply extremely straightforward. The expertise level is perfect and the way that it just records ten focuses to get you through the entire procedure is spot on. The best resume I've at any point seen was just a resume, with some exceptionally short visual cues that were composed so you don't have a clue w hat abilities you need or what they ought to be brought in the end.</p>

Ask Dana In the interview - How to have the dreaded salary conversation

Ask Dana In the interview - How to have the dreaded salary conversation Job Salary Conversation Question: In an interview, how do I handle questions related to salary? I’m afraid of sharing information that may knock me out of the running. Answer from Dana: There are two types of salary questions the interviewer could ask: What is your current (or most recent) salary? Answer this question honestly â€" the hiring company will be able to validate later. However, make sure to break your prior compensation into base salary and bonus. If they want you, they want to know how they can construct a competitive compensation package. What is your desired salary? Whatever you do, avoid answering with a number. Why? Too low, and they’ll offer you a salary that’s lower than market value. Too high and they’ll think you’re over-qualified or that you won’t be happy in the position after six months. Bottom line, the hiring company will say “we can’t afford him/her.” Here are some answers to always have in your hip pocket for this question: I am confident that will offer a competitive compensation package, so I don’t have one number in mind. I don’t have a specific goal in mind, as I understand compensation packages come in all shapes and sizes. If they push you and say, “we really want a target from you,” I still recommend repeating, “I wish I could give you one, but my goal is a combination of the right company with a market-competitive compensation package, and I’m very excited about his opportunity.” Now, for the salary question you want to ask them: “What is the salary for this position?” DON’T. I Repeat: DON’T DO IT! It doesn’t matter how far along you are in the interview process, who you are interviewing with (including HR), or how badly you think you need to know. Never, ever, ever ask anything related to your finances. This includes: “Is there a stock plan?” “Is there a bonus?” “What is the commission structure (sales)?” “What is the salary range?” Why? Because you will receive their salary proposal when you get job offer â€" and then its time to negotiate. If you do ask, you can appear cocky and presumptuous, and it raises suspicious about your priorities (even though they know money is important to everyone). I look at an interview like real estate: There’s only a fixed amount of property (or time with the interviewer) and you want to maximize that real estate by ensuring every move is helping rather than hurting your chances. So make sure that you ask questions, too. Here are some of my favorite questions to ask in an interview. I’m very self-motivated. How will you measure my success in this position after one full year? It’s very important for me to meet as many team members as possible in the first 30 days. How will you recommend I do that? What are the top three skills or experiences you are looking for that may not be mentioned in the job description? Which characteristics stand out in your top performers? I’m a perfectionist in some areas. What are the aspects of this position that absolutely require precision? What do you find most creative about what you do? (Replace “creative” with another positive skill of the position.) Now, ask yourself: Do you want to “waste” a question on your compensation? Or do you want to ask several of the above questions?

While there will never be a flat out highly contrasting response to Should I take a counteroffer? understand that businesses might be eased for a second on the off chance that you consent to remain, however angry over the long haul. You may likewise get known as the organization or division flight chance, and that is never something worth being thankful for, particularly if your manager faces spending chops or cutbacks not far off. Think about who's the simple one to cut at that point? In case you're intellectually out of there, finish the procedure and withdraw as arranged. (Here's some further perusing on counteroffers.) 5. Take care of the Potential issues You would prefer not to be known as the person who left the spot a catastrophe, isn't that so? Obviously not. So clean up your records and your issues before you hit the street. Make things as simple for your boss and your replacement as could reasonably be expected. This will go far, both from a momentary calculated point of view and as far as your drawn out notoriety. 6. Leave Strong This ties into your drawn out notoriety and is a significant last advance while leaving and proceeding onward to a new position opportunity. Leave solid. I'm not saying storm out in a burst of greatness, not in any manner. I'm stating leave certainly. Be charitable and thankful to your director and partners. Be productive and legit (however not pissy) in your post employment survey. Try not to feel that you need to over-disclose to everybody why you're leaving and where you're going in the event that you would prefer not to, however unquestionably bid farewell. Close out this part richly, and afterward praise all that is to come. Photograph of individual strolling down lobby politeness of Shutterstock.

How to Research Your Industry on Social Media

How to Research Your Industry on Social Media Executive recruiters are always on the hunt for subject experts within a defined field. Corporations and their HR functions sift through thousands of resumes looking for these business leaders. So how do you find the hottest topics in order to stay relevant and attractive to todays hiring influencers? Thankfully, research is a lot easier today than it was in my days as a police detective, and you need to look no further than the social media applications on your nearest computer, smartphone or tablet. While LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and Google+ are invaluable for job search, networking, and attracting recruiters and other leads, they also hold great value as research tools. All four of these social media platforms have very sophisticated search features. In the case of LinkedIn, subscribing to one of their Premium accounts unlocks even more search parameters. Use these tools to search for keywords most pertinent to you, and identify the people, posts, discussions, and comments happening around those appointed topics. All but LinkedIn also offer hashtags as another method of discovery. From there you can find people and companies to connect with and follow, interesting links to read and share, and groups to join. Groups, especially LinkedIn groups, have been of tremendous use to my senior-level clients. Tip: Introducing yourself to the group is a simple step that many overlook, but can generate notable rewards. When you comment on the most important and current topics in your industry, and share suggestions with peers and other influencers, you elevate your status as an industry leader. If you are serious about managing and advancing your career, I encourage you to devote a fair chunk of your job search time to research your target areas and uncover industry influencers. Your job search will be fruitless if you dont have a goal in mind and conduct your research accordingly. Use the traditional industry associations and databases, but dont neglect social media and its robust research tools. How much time do you allocate to research?

How to Write an ATS-Compliant Resume

How to Write an ATS-Compliant Resume To start, if you dont know what ATS is or how it applies to a modern-day job search please read What Job Seekers Need to Know About ATS. If you are aware of ATS and want to write a resume that works for the system, read on. The easiest way to ensure your resume will be accepted by an ATS is to submit a resume that is both ATS-friendly and human-reader ready. The two are not mutually exclusive; however, ATS-friendly resumes are formatted more carefully, while human-reader resumes may contain graphic elements that make the document easier to read and more attractive to the reader. The ultimate goal is to have the resume reviewed by a human, even an ATS-friendly resume needs to be readable â€" and attractive â€" to human eyes. With this in mind, I provide all of my clients with a copy of each!   A design resume (for networking and in-person distribution) and an ATS-compliant resume for online applications (that can still be easily followed by a person). Some Quick ATS Resume Considerations: 1. If you are given the choice to copy-and-paste the resume or upload a file during an application process, choose the upload option. This will ensure formatting is retained for the eventual human reader. 2. Ensure graphics dont interfere with robot reading by adding graphics to the resume as image files, which are typically ignored by the system. Then, translate information from a graphic into the body of the file so details can be read by the system. 3. One way to ensure a match with a posted job is to “mirror” the job posting in your resume, never copying and pasting the complete job ad (this will be flagged and get your application removed), but working to incorporate job posting details naturally into your resume content. 4. The main body of the resume is critical â€" some ATS software cannot read header/footer information, so if you include contact information in those sections it may not be read. (And remember, geographic location can be used as a filter so include your city, state/province and zip/postal code.) 5. Populate the file with appropriate keywords. Work experience sections should also include the skills used in the role (including computer software and hardware, if relevant). 6. One nice thing about applicant tracking systems is that they are not sensitive to the length of the resume, so two or more pages are fine. Just remember that an eventual person could read the file and may be fatigued by long length. Keep all content relevant to the reader! 7. ATS may be sensitive to formatting issues. For example, dont condense text and try to avoid light-coloured font. These may be hard for the system to read. 8. Even if hiring managers are using a formal applicant tracking system, they may also file documents on their hard drive. Use your name and targeted job title in the resume file (i.e:   John Smith-Financial Accountant-Resume.docx) instead of the generic “Resume.docx So, does an ATS-friendly resume have to be basic and boring? Not necessarily â€" although formatting has to be carefully considered. Fast Formatting Tips: Use a Microsoft Office Word file in .docx format (preferred). Or re-save your Word file as a Text Only (.txt) file. List your contact information at the top of the document never in the header or footer. Create section headings that are clear and common like Summary,” “Work Experience,” and “Education.” Make headers larger. Use simple bullets (•) or keyboard characters (*, -, or ). Ensure appropriate white space throughout the file. Put the targeted job title as the header of the resume. Make your intentions clear. List work history in reverse chronological order (this is easier for the system to read).   List position information in the order of: company name, dates, position title, role requirements, and bulleted achievements. Match the language of the job posting as much as possible, authentically. Populate the file with relevant, repeated keywords and key phrases   with variations (ex:   managed and managing). Add keywords to the files metadata. Dont place resume details within tables. These details may not be read or may be difficult for the system to read. The easiest way to see how an applicant tracking system works is to try it out yourself. Since applicant tracking systems cost anywhere from $5,000 to several million dollars, there’s a free online service that job seekers can use to mimic the ATS called Jobscan. This system allows job seekers to assess their resume using the criteria that an applicant tracking system uses. A caveat!   This system isnt perfect or exact and there is no way to truly know how each individual ATS has been set-up to parse resumes.   Therefore, take any Jobscan suggestions with a grain of salt, adjusting content and strategy carefully for EACH application. Customizing a new resume for every application is key. Finally, keep in mind that the best way to beat the system is to work around ATS whenever possible.  Online job applications yield a very low ROI for job seekers.   Increased success strategies include networking and referrals so diversify your job search tactics and pursue multiple avenues when seeking a new job (dont rely exclusively on job boards).   Make good use of your DESIGN resume and get it in front of peoplebecause at the end of the day: people hire people! Know Thy Resume (and how I biffed an interview)

Know Thy Resume (and how I biffed an interview) (for those that are wondering, Im done with my conferences, everything was spectacular, and my Blogging for Business conference was well attended and, in my view, a great success thanks for your support!) Last year I had to put my resume together. After I had an acceptable draft, and had collected all the information that I hadnt had to care about for a while (official job titles, the names of my degrees, etc.), I got an e-mail from my dad. He had hired a professional resume writer for his own resume, and sent me a copy so that I could take what was applicable. So I super-charged my resume by borrowing some of the stuff on his resume. One thing I liked (not sure if resume writers would recommend this) was a section at the top with keywords of course, writing a resume is a time for self-praise, and I liked all of the cool words that he had on his resume. I had to take a few out, but kept most of the flattering descriptions of him, er, me. You can see my Expertise section here (I didnt highlight Change Management on the real resume, just for this post): And then I sent that resume all over the place to about 100 different postings. When I went in to a second interview with a really hot IT company, one of the interviewers asked On your resume it says change management, what exactly does that mean? This is what went through my mind, at the time: Hm, I have no idea where I put that on my resume, but of course I know what change management means. Ive lived through change management and could write a (very) short book on it! Do you want to know about personal change management, or change management as it pertains to teams, projects, companies? Just tell me what you want to know and Ill tell you why Im an expert in it! Dang, I wish I could remember what job/position I listed change management under! But, what I said was something like this: Thats on my resume, huh? Where exactly is that? Needless to say, they werent impressed as I fumbled my way through that one. Needless to say, I didnt get the job. Oh well, thats okay, a few months later the company went under. But I learned to not just review the list of tough interview questions, and have my tell me about yourself elevator pitch honed, but to also know my own resume!
